TV-based games often turn out to be a “hot mess,” but Atari wants to “make it work” with a Wii adaptation of the Lifetime Network’s latest acquisition, Project Runway. According to a Variety report, Project Runway production company Weinstein Co. has signed a deal with Atari for a series of games based on the hit show, with the first title to appear on the Wii next spring.

While the show’s stars, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, have not yet been finalized for the game, the various parties are working out details to have them appear. Players can expect the game to follow the show’s format, wherein an assortment of aspiring designers are given a challenge and a limited amount of time to create new fashions fitting the theme every week. Gunn provides contestants with advice along the way, and a panel of fashion experts (including Klum) watch models take the designs up the runway, rating the efforts and eliminating at least one designer at the end of each show.

According to Variety, the game will ask players to make their designs and specify hair, makeup, and accessories for their models. When it comes time for the runway portion of the show, players will be able to use the Wii Balance Board to virtually strut the catwalk, or stand on the sidelines as a photographer, snapping shots of the new outfits. The game will have an enthusiastic and dedicated fan base to tap into, as Project Runway attracts more than 4 million viewers every week.

Project Runway isn’t the only mainstream show about to find its way into games. The Twilight series of teen vampire novels and films is getting into games with its very own Scene It? trivia game, and Deep Silver is prepping a game based on Fox’s concluded Prison Break. Reality TV titles have been particularly plentiful, with Hell’s Kitchen, Deadliest Catch, Karaoke Revolution: American Idol, and Dancing With the Stars all receiving gaming adaptations.

Def Jam: Fight for New York was a great game. The inclusion of hip hop stars as the character just added to the already strong fighting mechanics: a tactical mix of brawling, wrestling, and just plain craziness. The story was also strong; Snoop Doggy Dogg turned in a memorable performance as Crow, a bad guy who was truly fun to hate. When you finally got to “take care” of him in the end it was a great gaming moment. You could also use cult favorite Danny Trejo to beat up Flava Flav (even typing that sentence was awesome). Now we have Def Jam Icon, and after spending most of yesterday and today playing it, I have to wonder what the hell happened.

The deep and satisfying fighting from the past Def Jam games is gone, replaced with a fighting system that’s easy to pick up, but ultimately shallow. There are only a few moves, and the characters all seem like they’re moving through water; the animations are slow and unresponsive. I’m going to address some of the other things going on with this game, but it’s all secondary to the fact that the fighting gets dull very fast. Since this is a fighting game at heart, the rest of the trappings can’t do much to make up for that one major shortcoming.

Which is a shame, because the game does many other things right. The graphics are beautiful, although I could have done without the strong color filters used on many levels. The characters are big and detailed, and it can be fun to throw them around the screen. Without any graphical health indicators on the screen, you get a great cinematic presentation, and the character’s faces get pleasantly lumpy and bloody as the fight wears on. Even without a health bar, it’s pretty easy to see how things are going for each side.

The game received a lot of hype for its use of music; the backgrounds move and thump and writhe along with the beat of whatever song is playing in the background. Using your own soundtrack and watching the level act like a giant equalizer is interesting visually but ruins the mood of the game. Do the players see this? Should we just assume each of the characters took a few hits of the good stuff before the fight? The music is interactive as well: you hit a button to stick your hand out as if you have a turntable in front of you and then you use the analogue sticks to “mix” the soundtrack, and thus the background. So you can throw someone through a video screen, and then speed up the beats so it explodes. It looks like a decent concept for a sneaker commercial, but in a game that’s trying very hard to be all gangsta, it comes off as silly. I kept imagining someone making those motions in a real fight and then getting backhanded. You just can’t take it seriously.

The story is your standard “I’m moving up the ranks of a record label by beating random people up” deal. You get your own apartment to relax in between fights, and there is even a record label minigame you can play on your virtual computer. You sign artists, give them a promotional budget, and take your percentage. You have to keep both your artists and women happy, and that’s expensive. Mo’ money, mo’ problems, I believe they say. You can buy your clothes and accessories from a commendably wide list of choices, and it can be fun to make a really goofy looking fighter. No matter how dressed up you are and how many platinum records you get, you’ll still have to go to the fights and get annoyed by the shallow game play.

If you’ve ever heard a longtime video game player complain about how games these days are far too easy in general, chances are this is the type of person who would have appreciated Super Star Soldier around the time it hit the TurboGrafx-16 back in 1991. Developed by Hudson, a developer best known for its Bomberman series, Super Star Soldier was a fairly impressive but conventional shoot-’em-up in its day. Looking back on it now, the game still offers a pure and punishing level of challenge as only an arcade-style shoot-’em-up can. It’s woefully inappropriate for anyone discouraged by the idea of having to meticulously memorize enemy patterns or use razor-sharp reflexes to avoid near-constant hailstorms of enemy bullets. But if all that sounds like fun, do check it out.

Almost all shoot-’em-ups boil down to you piloting a lone spacecraft against an entire enemy armada that’s got unlimited firepower and nothing to do but try to gun you and all your extra lives down. Super Star Soldier doesn’t so much as bother to give you a reason for all the madness; instead, it thrusts you right into the first of a number of difficult stages as soon as you start the game. This is a prototypical vertical-scrolling shoot-’em-up. The object is not to die as you collect multiple power-ups to increase your power and raise your defenses. Stages throw considerable variety at you because you’ll be contending with ground-based targets, as well as flying enemies coming from every which way. Stages have sub-bosses, as well as main bosses, which force you to concentrate fire on their weak points while avoiding their fast, deadly attacks. Unfortunately, Super Star Soldier does not support two-player simultaneous play like many other, similar games.

It’s a top scrolling, arcade style shooter. It has about as much plot as you would expect from this kind of game made in the early 90’s. I’m told the story has something to do with invading Zeograds or some such thing. What Zeo is and how you graduate from it I don’t know, but I do know this: Soldier Blade is a MUST for any Wii owner with thumbs!

I sat in front of the TV until staying any longer would have made me late for my lame-ass job. One of the awesome things about this little jewel is the “Challenge” mode where you have to rack up as many points in 2 or 5 minutes as possible. It’s a great way to spend those 7 minutes until your bus comes.

This game brought back all those memories of hours and quarters waisted in arcades on games just like this one. Its awesome and I have no hesitation giving this title five out of five tacos!

Released nearly a year ago now, Lumines Live! took the successful PlayStation Portable puzzle game and transported it to the Xbox Live Arcade. Downloadable content soon followed, and the latest content to make an appearance will be a set of 20 new skins with a ‘holiday’ theme. They’ll cost 400 Microsoft points when they land on October 17th 2007, but we managed to score a quick look at some of them on a recent visit to Q! Entertainment in Tokyo.

The first new skin that we saw featured a halloween-themed background with spinning pumpkins as well as witches who flew by on broomsticks. Halloween is a big deal out in Japan, with many downtown stores already selling items for October 31 ahead of TGS in mid-September. The skin featured a hardcore dance music track, pretty much in keeping with many other levels in the game. The other new skins that we saw were just as crazy, with one featuring spinning turkeys roasting above a fire for Thanksgiving, and another one with Santa Claus in a tropical setting accompanied by a Jamaican musical number. The only thing that this content will be missing is new achievements to unlock.

One of the most exciting pieces of news to come out of our visit is that another new skin will be released for free for owners of the game with an Xbox Live Gold account. A new Genki Rockets single called Heavenly Star will be making its way to the network in October, but it is likely that it will be available for a limited time only. We really liked the song, an upbeat but quite mellow dance number, and the music video used some cool rotoscope effects.

The new holiday pack for Lumines Live! had a very playful feel to it, and we can’t wait to see some of the 17 other skins that will make it into the package. It’s also good to see Q! Entertainment supporting the community with free content this long after the game’s release. Expect to see all the new content arriving on Xbox Live Arcade in October, along with another of Q!’s puzzle games in the form of Every Extend Extra Extreme.
